Slave

I'm a slave from a land so far
I was caught and
I was brought here from Africa
I'm a slave from a land so far
I was caught and
I was brought here from Africa

Well it was licks like fire
From de white slavemaster
Everyday I dong on knees
Weeks and weeks before we cross de seas to reach in de west indies

And den he make we wuk
And den ah wuk
Good lord no pay
Ah toil
Ah toil, Ah toil
Ah toil hard each day
I'm dying
I'm crying
Oh oh-oh...oh oh
Oh Lord I wanna be free

Many times ah wanted to run
But de (?) slavemaster standing dey wit de gun
Oh I know he go shoot to kill
So ah stay, stay and ah pray
But ah planning still
I study night and day how to break away
Ah got to make a brilliant escape
But everytime ah tink about de whip an' dem dogs
Meh body does start tuh shake

He make we wuk
Ah said ah wuk
Oh lord no pay
Ah toil
Ah toil
Ah toil hard each day
I'm dying
I'm crying
Oh oh-oh...oh oh
Oh Lord I wanna be free

La la la la la...

In my heart, there was much to say
Ah always hope de boss woulda listen to me some day
Although he knew (damn well knew) my request was very small
But de sting ah the whip there to answer me when ah hell
We had to chant and sing to express ourselves
To dat wicked and cruel man
That was the only medicine to make he listen
And is so calyso began

He make we wuk
Ah say ah wuk
Oh lord no pay
Ah toil
Ah toil, ah toil
Ah toil hard each day
I'm dying
I'm crying
Oh ooh-oh-oh...oh oh
Oh Lord I wanna be free

(La da da da dey....)

And den times change in so many, many many ways
Then one day somebody said "Free de bloody slaves"
I was then
Put out on the street
Ah ha' no clothes, ha' no food and no place to sleep
Worst of all
Had no education, no particular ambition
This I cannot conceal
Forgot my native culture
Ah lived like a vulture, from de white man ah had to steal

Because he make we wuk
Ah said ah wuk
Oh lord no pay
Ah toil
Ah toil
Ah toil
Ah toil hard each day
I'm dying
I'm crying
Oh ooh-oh-oh...oh oh.....
Oh Lord I wanna be free

Portrait of Trinidad (1965)

Trinidad is my land
And of it I am proud and glad
But I can't understand
Why some people does talk it bad
(But I know)
All of them whey runnin' dey mout'
Doh know whey they talkin' bout
They will paint here balck everyday
But the right things they would never say

CHORUS

Like our sportsmen
Being rated among the best
Our scholars have sit and passed every test
And put us right 'longside de rest
(But then)
Our pitch lake is the greatest one of its kind
Our sugar and oil is really refined
So you see, friends, this is a real King
Solomon's mine.

VERSE TWO

They does talk some nonsense
Me eh know whey dey ding it for
Bout so much violence
Man, yuh would swear that we fighting war
We have we delinquents to face
But just like any other place
Well the things they does say bout here
Is really too much for me to bear

CHORUS

Because my people are daily making progress
Without any form of stupidness
And in this way we much gain success
For when we moving
We all move as one body
No bickering between you and me
For our policy stand for racial equality

VERSE THREE

So when a stranger spending
A little time in this lovely isle
Every day you see him
He always have a hearty smile
When his time is up to depart
He would say with pride in heart
I'll be back, you could bet yuh life
And if ah cyah come ah go sen' mih wife

CHORUS

And then he'll tell you
He really wants her to come
To drink a rum and have plenty fun
In this great island in the sun
For Trinidadians (as foreigners do recall)
It doesn't matter whether big or small
Or if you rich or poor, friend
We cater for one and all

VERSE FOUR

So all uh dem whey talkin'
They either drunk or they starin' mad
Or maybe they forgettin'
Mr Universe belongs to Trinidad
And yet
We have men of talent and skill
With high hopes of improving still
And if you think all this is a lie
The Mighty Sniper go tell you why

CHORUS

Now, our steelbands
Is the best talent in the world
By calypsoes our stories are told
With this rhythm to touch your soul
So Trinidad, this lovely land of my birth
Small, but overwhelming in worth
And as you know Carnival is the greatest
frolic on earth.

Progress (1980)

Today as I look around
In the world
What do I see?
I see
Footprints that man has left on the sand
While walking through time.
I see fruits of our ambitions
Figments of our imaginations
And I ask myself
When will it end?
When will it end?
It is plain to see
Universally,
This planet is not bountiful as it was
Simply because
In his quest for success
Nothing stands in man's way
World rivers run dry
Soon the birds won't fly
The mountains will be no longer high
And when I relating to meh lord I does wonder why.

I see
Charity deplored
Equal rights totally ignored
Wisdom and ingenuity working in accord
Simply to afford such inventions
As thermonuclear warfare
And environmental warfare
And I wonder now
Where do we go from here?
Prophets everywhere
Gaze upon the horizons
And declare that judgment will come
As the savage hands of unscrupulous men
Defile everything passing by
Time is running out
As we eat and drink
Species on the brink
Of being extinct
And I think
No one can deny
The price of progress is high

I see consciousness abate
As today, we live recklessly
Money
Makes egos inflate
And, thereby, creates,
A turbulent state.

I see a struggle
Between the sexes
New hang-ups and old complexes
Now the question is
Right in context
What shall be next?

I have already seen
The world has become divided
Between race, colour, creed and class
And some of the things
The scriptures predict
Truthfully come to pass
Soil that wouldn't bear
Children making children
To be part of this growing mass
And I ask
If this is progress
How long will it last?

Chorus

All these years I spent abroad in de cold longing to be home
Trini to de bone, trini to de bone
God I pray that some sweet day I will no longer have to roam
Trini to de bone, trini to de bone
De problems we have are plain to see
We prove we could stand de scrutiny
All and all, a true democracy
How we vote, is not how we party
There's no place like home some people say
Though some have to leave to make their way
But in their hearts I know their destiny
To come home and big up de country

(Sweet sweet T&T) Lord how I love up dis country
(Sweet sweet T&T) No place in dis world I'd rather be
(Sweet sweet T&T) Lord how I love up meh country
(Sweet sweet T&T) All dis sugar cyar be good for me

Look ah Trini gyal dey, she breaking away
Tobago gyal, oh what a bacchanal
De men dem wild, de wickedest style
De gyal look back, dey on de attack
De style just change, man re-arrange
De fete gone clear, cause nothing can compare to a Trini rising
Oh no no, (Oh no) nothing can compare to a Trini rising

As crazy as we might seem to be
We still fight to be a family
Indian, African or a Chinee
Syrian, French-Creole and Portuguese
We blessed wit' a spirit fiery
Some people say God is a Trini
Sweet women parade abundantly
Now de problem is plain to see

Chorus

(Oh oh) West Mooring to Los Iros
